Sydney Sweeney is gearing up to bring boxing icon Christy Martin’s incredible story to life on the silver screen. The 26-year-old actress will play the legendary fighter in a yet-to-be-titled biopic.

The film, directed by David Michôd and produced by Black Bear Studios alongside Sweeney’s production company Fifty Fifty Films, Anonymous Content, Votiv, and Yoki, will soon be introduced to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market.

The biopic will delve into the astonishing true story of Christy Martin, who soared to fame in the 1990s as America’s most successful female boxer.

“Christy’s charisma, good looks and unwavering resilience in the ring won her a wide fan base and propelled her to become welterweight champion,” reads the synopsis.

“Behind this well-honed public persona, Christy tackled personal demons, toxic relationships, and an attempt on her life, proving that a fighter’s hardest won victories aren’t always in the ring.”

Sweeney shared her excitement about the role on Instagram, saying she is “honored to tell Christy’s powerful story.” The “Euphoria” star is looking forward to the demanding physical and emotional aspects of portraying Martin’s journey.

“I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train and transform my body,” Sweeney told Deadline. “Christy’s story isn’t a light one. It’s physically and emotionally demanding. There’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”

Christy Martin was the first female boxer to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and joined the International Boxing Hall of Fame four years later. She ended her career with 49 wins (37 by knockout), 7 losses, and 3 draws.

Her journey wasn’t without personal trials; she survived a brutal attack by her then-husband in 2010 and continues to inspire as a survivor and advocate. The biopic promises to shine a light on Martin’s legacy, showcasing her tenacity and triumph over adversity.
