Earl Charles Spencer announced on social media Saturday that he and his wife Karen Gordon are separating, marking his third divorce.
Despite this news, the Earl seemed in good spirits, sharing pictures on Instagram from a family outing on Sunday. He took his sons to a rugby match, posting a photo of the packed stadium.
The Spencer family home, Althorp House, located in Northamptonshire, is also the burial site of Princess Diana, on a small island in the Oval Lake.
Earl Spencer has seven children from his three marriages: Lady Kitty, Lady Eliza, Lady Amelia, and Louis from his first marriage to Victoria Lockwood; Edmund and Lady Lara from his marriage to Caroline Freud; and Lady Charlotte with Karen Gordon.
Spencer and Karen Gordon, a Canadian philanthropist, met on a blind date in 2010 and married in June 2011, welcoming their daughter a little over a year later.
In a statement to the Mail on Sunday, the 60-year-old said: “It is immensely sad. I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future.”
This news coincides with a difficult time for Gordon, who recently revealed her father passed away from Alzheimer’s disease.
The Earl, who had a close relationship with his sister Diana, has remained on good terms with Prince Harry, attending the Invictus Games 10th anniversary service with his nephew last month. However, his relationships with his eldest children appear strained, as he did not attend the weddings of his daughters Kitty and Amelia in 2021 and 2023.
