Pharrell Williams, renowned artist and longtime composer for the “Despicable Me” franchise, has released a new song titled “Double Life” that is causing quite a stir among fans and followers of the series.
Since joining the franchise in 2010, Williams has significantly shaped its musical landscape.
However, his latest contribution is drawing attention not just for its catchy beats but for suspected lyrical digs at fellow artist Drake.
The track “Double Life” features lyrics that fans interpret as a subtle confrontation directed at the Canadian rapper. According to Genius, Williams raps:
“Hey, what are you hiding? (Watch)
What you do when you’re gone? (Hey)
Nothing wrong being private (Watch)
Make sure it ain’t wrong (Yeah)
Your life double-sided (Watch)
Two-faced like coins
What side do I get? (Watch)
What side are you on?”
This comes after Drake’s 2023 feature on Travis Scott’s track “Meltdown,” where he hinted at an ongoing feud involving Williams by rapping:
“I melt down the chains that I bought from your boss, give a f*ck about all of that heritage sh*t. Since V not around the members done hung up the Louis they not even wearing that sh*t.”
The speculation about Williams’ lyrics targeting Drake has fueled discussions on social media, with fans dissecting every line for hidden meanings.
Despite the buzz, Williams has not made any public comments regarding the alleged discord. Previously, he co-produced the Brent Faiyaz and Drake collaboration “Wasting Time” in 2021, suggesting a more collaborative past between the two artists.
Adding to the year’s drama, Kendrick Lamar, who is also set to appear in Williams’ LEGO-animated biopic “Piece by Piece” this October, has released multiple tracks airing grievances with Drake.
