ISLAMABAD – A district and sessions court in the federal capital turned down the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the Iddat case.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka announced the ruling, which was reserved on June 25. He has upheld the sentences of the former premier and his wife in the case

The former prime minister, who was ousted from the office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, has been facing multiple cases involving allegations of corruption, terrorism and illegal nikkah.

He has been kept in the jail since August 2023 when a trial court awarded him sentence in the Toshakhana case.

The PTI founder has secured relief in cases related to £190 million and Toshakhana. He has been acquitted in the cipher case and he is currently detained in the Adiala Jail due to his conviction in the iddat case.

Earlier this year, Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in jail in a case related to the Nikkah during the Iddat period.

The verdict was later challenged in the court of Judge Shahrukh Arjumand, who had reserved the verdict on their appeals against the conviction

However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) later transferred the case to Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka after Khawar Maneka expressed no-confidence in Judge Arjumand.

Judge Majoka reserved the verdict on June 25, reserved its verdict on pleas against Khan and Bushra’s conviction, after he was directed by the high court to decide the matter within 10 days.
