SUCRE – The Bolivian government has nabbed former general Juan Jose Zuniga after the South American nation saw a failed coup attempt.

The former military officer was nabbed after attempting to take over presidential palace to oust President Luis Arce.

Tensions escalated dramatically when armed forces led by General Juan Jose Zuniga gathered at La Paz’s Plaza Murillo, near the presidential palace and legislature. The group attempted to enter the palace, prompting President Luis Arce to denounce a coup attempt and call for national mobilization to defend democracy.

After the failed coup attempt, President hailed withdrawal as triumph for democracy and addressed the country’s citizens in aftermath.

Several countries including the US urged calm amid political unrest as Sucra prepares for upcoming general elections, marked by divisions over former President Evo Morales’ potential return to power.
