Audra McDonald is going to star in Broadway’s Gypsy Revival, in the role of Mama Rose,
According to Variety, the show is going to be directed by the Tony winner for “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk,” and “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches”, George C. Wolfe.
The show is returning to the stage this fall.
Gypsy is based on a book by Arthur Laurents, and has music by Jule Styne and lyrics by the late Stephen Sondheim. Camille A.
The musical will be choreographed by Brown.
Gipsy, regarded as one of the best musicals, narrates the tale of an aspirational stage mother’s fearless attempts to launch her two daughters into the entertainment industry.
The meaty part of Rose was created by Ethel Merman in 1959 and has since been played by theatre greats including Patti LuPone, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Angela Lansbury.
“When we began this journey we had the specific dream of pairing Audra McDonald, our most lauded stage actress, with legendary director George C. Wolfe in a musical deemed by many to be the greatest,” producers Tom Kirdahy and Mara Isaacs shared.
