Veteran actor Brian Cox, who plays the formidable Logan Roy in the hit series Succession, has shared the bittersweet impact of his role on his life.
Despite winning numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the Roy family patriarch, the 77-year-old admitted to BBC Scotland News that the show’s success came at a price.
“One thing I have lost is my anonymity, which I prized,” he said. “It is a double-edged sword… everybody knows who I am now.”
While appreciative of the recognition the show has brought, Cox lamented the loss of obscurity he once enjoyed, saying, “People would say you’re…? I loved the fact people didn’t know what to say because I had done so much variation. But now Logan Roy is it, as far as the general public is concerned.”
Despite this, he remains fond of his time on Succession and his fellow cast members. “It was a great time, one of the best jobs ever, particularly because of the ensemble,” he said.
“We are close as a family and it was one of the happiest jobs ever.”
He praised Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and other cast members, noting how they recently flew to London to watch him on stage in Long Day’s Journey Into Night.
Cox also watched Snook perform in her London stage production of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
His Bafta TV Award nomination came as a surprise. “I thought that’s gone and I’d moved on. But Logan keeps popping back up whether I like it or not,” Cox said, adding that winning awards is nice but “it’s not about that; it’s about doing the work.”
