June Squibb, 94, has secured her first leading role in the new film “Thelma,” which was released by Magnolia on June 21, 2024. The film, a warm and moving comedy, tells the story of a Jewish grandmother who embarks on a quest across Los Angeles to recover $10,000 stolen in a phone scam. Squibb, who has been acting since the 1950s, stars alongside Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, and Fred Hechinger.

In a recent interview, Squibb shared insights about her life and career. She discussed her long-standing career, which includes notable roles in “Nebraska,” “About Schmidt,” and numerous television appearances. Reflecting on her varied roles, she said, “I always loved what I was doing. I just wanted to work. And I think it’s true that as you work, the more you work — not always but most of the time — the roles do get bigger.”

“Thelma” was written and directed by Josh Margolin, who based the character on his own grandmother. Margolin revealed that Squibb was the only actress he had in mind for the role, saying, “If Squibb said ‘no,’ there wasn’t really a plan B.”

The film was a hit at Sundance earlier this year, sparking a bidding war. It also marks a milestone in Squibb’s career, which has been filled with supporting roles that highlight her talent for playing strong, quirky characters. “I can be loud. I’ve done bitchy things,” Squibb noted, describing how her real-life personality often aligns with the strong characters she portrays.

Despite her age, Squibb performed most of her own stunts for “Thelma,” including riding a scooter, which she learned to operate for the film. Producer Zoë Worth initially had reservations but was convinced by Squibb’s determination and skill. “Her comfort made us comfortable,” Worth said.

Squibb’s long career includes playing memorable roles as the mother, grandmother, or confidante to many well-known actors. She has appeared alongside stars such as Jack Nicholson, Steve Carell, and Adam Sandler. Her portrayal of Kate in “Nebraska” earned her an Oscar nomination, a role she secured after proving to director Alexander Payne that she could embody the character’s “strength and grossness.”

Squibb’s life off-screen is just as vibrant. She enjoys a close-knit community in her Sherman Oaks apartment complex and has a love for rescue cats. Her home is filled with memorabilia from her career, reflecting her passion for acting.
